Projects like Fanhouse are just trying new ideas for types of social networks, ideas that have a very low chance of competing with existing social networks because they aren't sufficiently compelling to pull users away from Instagram/Twitter/etc.
They argue that the ability to exchange tokens and NFTs and DAO ownership will make their idea work better than if they did it in Web2 and just exchanged money, karma and stock / asset ownership, but I never buy that argument.
