As a matter of logic, the value prop story needs to exist for something to succeed. Occasionally a scientist or mathematician can tinker with literally zero known value prop stories, but 99% of the time if something succeeds you really should at least identify *a* plausible value prop story even if it's not the one that catches fire the most.
